CAU Turns 40!

“It is time for Cornell to lead its alumni not by the hand, but by the mind.” This was the call with which Trustee Les Severinghaus ’21 introduced President Perkins in 1966. Curt Reis ’56 was so moved by this declaration that it became the heart of his and classmate Ernie Stern’s drive to create an educational program encouraging former students to return to Cornell.

Two years later, on July 21, 1968, CAU—Cornell’s Alumni University—began with a two-week program of what Curt described then as “intellectual challenge, cultural stimulation, and family recreation in a friendly and familiar setting.” CAU—now Cornell’s Adult University—has grown considerably in the past four decades. These days it embraces alumni and other adults who regard an enlightening stay in a dorm, at sea, or on the road as the finest of vacations.

As we celebrate CAU’s fortieth year, we’d love to have you join us in Ithaca or abroad for a chance to enjoy yourself in the company of stimulating classmates and outstanding faculty. Many past participants describe CAU’s intellectual zest and warmth of community as transforming.

As you mull over our 2008 options, on campus and off, please contact us if you have any questions.

With warm regards from all of us at CAU,

Catherine Penner ’68
Director
